While most people think leaky gut syndrome is all about what you are or are not eating, this isn’t exactly the truth. The next several posts will cover other things that affect your healthy gut. Today will be a fairly short one and covers medications.
As I have stated before, I am not a certified naturopathic practitioner. All the details I provide are informational. Before stopping or starting anything new, please consult your health practitioner as several changes can have adverse effects on the body.
When I use the term ‘medication,’ I use it in terms of allopathic (or western) medicine. These compounds may start out as a natural material, but are twisted, compounded, and altered to form something completely different. If you have ever read a prescription warning label, you probably have seen some type of warning on every medication or prescription available. This is because of the changes performed on the natural material. Many of these medications negatively impact the body’s ability to heal itself on its own. Example: When a person takes certain allopathic antibiotics, it kills the body’s immune system. This means it will take many months for the immune system to naturally grow back and be able to function properly. This long explanation is for my statement above to consult your practitioner before you make any changes to medications.
Medications while helping in certain areas can also negatively impact other areas. The following list of medications can negatively impact the digestive system and create a leaky gut scenario. The medications include chemotherapy, NSAIDs, anti-inflammatory, antibiotics, steroids, acid reflux, anti-depressants, female hormones.
If you are taking any of these medications, you may want to find alternative treatments. Several options are listed below. I can’t say this enough, do not just stop taking any medications that have been prescribed for you by your health practitioner. Consult them before making any changes.
Allopathic Antibiotics. Can be replaced by natural antibiotics such as colloidal silver, honey, garlic, onions, oregano oil, echinacea, and raw apple cider vinegar.

Acid Reflux. Read the leaky gut syndrome series regarding fiber and beans. You must restart your natural digestive system’s bacteria to find relief.

NSAIDs (Motrin, Advil, Tylenol, etc.). There are many different pain killers out there. It all depends on what type of pain you have and where. Example, you don’t fix a muscle tear pain with something to relieve a headache. Food and drinks that are also pain killers include cherries, grapes, willow bark tea, and green tea. Herbs include Boswellia, turmeric, peppermint oil, and cloves. Other ideas include acupuncture, heat and ice, exercise, proper sleep, and massage.
Anti-Depressants. I’ve talked about depression before and the recommendations are the same here. Omega 3 fatty oils daily, along with herbs that fit your needs which may include St. John’s Wort, SAM-e, chasteberry, black cohosh, aswagandha, kava kava, and raspberry leaf tea.

As you can see, there are many options available out there that naturally heal your body without the very concerning side effects with medications.
It’s time to start thinking of how you can help your body heal itself. You are wanting a better life ahead of you, otherwise you wouldn’t be interested in my blog. Take the steps needed – even if you are just taking baby steps at first – to find a healthier way of living.
