We talk about many different alternative medical approaches here.  My role is education.  I want to make sure you have enough information to make informed decisions about your health.  Most of the time, I learn something new right along with you!  Let’s talk about your ears.  Do you struggle with hearing at times? Do you have pressure in your ears? Do you have sinus issues? Do you have severe allergies? If you said yes to any of these, have you ever considered ear candling?

What is ear candling? Ear candling utilizes hollow candles made of waxed cloth, sometimes with other natural healing agents like rosemary, sage, and honey. It is highly recommended that a professional perform the procedure as the ear is easily damaged. The procedure takes no more than 40 minutes to complete both ears.

How does ear candling work? The tapered end of the candle is inserted into the ear while the subject lies on their side.  It is adjusted until it creates a seal.  As the candle burns the heat warms the existing wax in the ear, a gentle suction draws out the wax. Once the procedure is complete, the candle is gently removed. No wax is allowed to drip into the ear canal.

Ear candling benefits. Beyond the obvious – wax removal and improved hearing, there are some lesser-known benefits. You may benefit from relief from headaches / migraines due to the reduced pressure on certain blood vessels. Some people that have motion sickness, vertigo, or nausea find relief due to reduced pressure on the ear drum. If you have sinus issues or severe allergies, you may find those issues reduced. By clearing ear wax buildup your body is able to heal problems in the head easier. This goes for ear infections and sore throats.

Is ear candling a pseudoscience? I have read all the same articles you will or have. Would you think better of it if a huge newspaper touted its benefits? Check out this recommendation from The New York Times Magazine

Where can I have ear candling done? There are several places that provide this service including Spas, Estheticians, and Naturopathic Practitioners.

What are the dangers?  There are several if you try doing it yourself, or by someone that is inexperienced.  Temporary hearing loss, burns from wax, and ear drum perforation.

I have never tried ear candling by I know people that have, and they have had very positive results. Again, I HIGHLY recommend you go to a professional to have your ear candling completed. Damaged ear drums are not the goal here.

So, what are your thoughts?
